to be simple. look at how george w. bush became president. it was the overpowering incentive in the republican party was in win. in the 1990s they lost. the government shutdown in 1995. they lost when clinton won again. they lost on impeachment. they say, we have to find a way to win an election. you have george w. bush and compassionate conservatism. it's a totally different game. they said compassionate conservative was big government conservatism and spoiled the good name of conservatism and gave us barack obama. you have two sort of competing things, two sort of complementary things going on in the conservative movement. one is standard. beat the other party's guy. beat barack obama. the other one is there's no such thing in a post-bush world of being too pure in the republican party. what that exactly means from a policy and agenda standpoint, i don't know, nobody's articulated yet. there's this constant battle now, constant reinforcement for people who seek out the most pure position, most pure label and you can gain stature, prominence and make a lot of money on the conservative side by

a little bit of breaking news this morning, a health concern having to do with former george w. bush. during his annual physical examination, this came from president bush's office, during his annual physical exam at the cooper clinic in dallas yesterday, a blockage was discovered in an artery in his heart. at the recommendation of his doctors, president bush has agreed to have a stint placed to open the blockage. the procedure was performed successfully earlier this morning without any complication at the texas health presbyterian hospital. president bush in high spirits, eager to return home tomorrow and resume his normal schedule thursday. he's grateful to the skilled medical professionals who cared for him. he thanks his family, friends, fellow citizens for prayers and well wishes and encourages us all to get our regular checkups. susan, here it is. this is a man, one thing about him, very healthy. >> super fit. >> a very fit life. just a reminder, no matter how much exercise you get -- >> god bless you, mr. president, and speedy recovery. he's an amazing man who has given to oth

remember the pictures of a very fit president george w. bush running and riding a mountain bike were surprised to hear he was in a dallas hospital today getting treatment for a clogged artery. mr. bush is 67 and had no history of heart disease. our dr. jon lapook has more about this. >> reporter: a statement from the former president's office said doctors discovered the blockage yesterday during mr. bush's annual physical. he then agreed with his physicians' recommendation to have a stent put in. in this procedure, a clogged blood vessel feeding the heart is usually opened up with a tiny balloon and the stent is placed to keep the artery from closing. specific details on why mr. bush received the stent have not been released. almost half a million people get them every year, but there's controversy about which patients benefit. so far, studies have shown that unless a person is having a heart attack or near heart attack, a stent is no better than medication and life-style changes at prolonging life or preventing a future heart attack. but many cardiologists believe there is still a b
